Making a Thin Rail Shaker Cabinet Door? Consider this to avoid drilling through your door!

The Micro Shaker cabinet door trend is growing in popularity, and depending on how the door is constructed, it may bring some unexpected challenges with hardware that works well in all your other builds, like wider rail shaker, slab, or raised panel doors.

Depending on how the door is built, it’s possible that the Microshaker door is thinner where the hinge attaches to it. In this case, an everyday hinge cup depth of 12-14mm will likely be too deep for the slim rail shaker door. We’ve received a few distress calls from cabinet builders who accidentally drilled through the door because their standard hinge cup depth is too deep for the slim rail door.

But have no fear, we have solutions!

Hardware solutions for thinner cabinet doors

As a Salice distributor, we love the variety of options they offer for specialty applications like hinges for thick doors, thin doors, and more. For thin rail shaker doors, we suggest using a hinge from Salice’s 100 series with an 11mm cup depth OR utilizing cup spacers for their 13.5mm deep cups but before selecting any hardware, always consider the thickness of your actual door.

  • Spacers are ideal for using a hinge cup too deep for this Micro Shaker door, but allows you to push the hardware off the door and still use.
  • Spacers are also a great solution for retrofit applications where a soft close cup is deeper than a standard close cup and is being retrofitted to make the doors soft close.

Adding in cabinet pull-outs or inserts to a slim rail shaker door? If the hardware attaches to the door, check the supplied brackets and screws included before drilling, too!
